Choosing Engagement and Wedding Rings

The wedding ring is a physical, symbolic representation of the special promise between bride and groom. No metal could ever compete with the love it symbolizes, but the ring's intrinsic value is what makes selecting the right one so important.

The notion of exchanging rings has only been put into practice over the last half century; the economic boom in the mid 20th century enabled the genesis of the groom's ring to complement that of the brides.

Use the following information to help you select a ring for one another that will be as cherished as the journey you two are about to embark upon.

The wedding ring complements the engagement ring

Traditionally, the engagement ring is supposed to be more stunning than the wedding ring. The wedding ring is to be captivating as well, but the wonderful notion of spending your lives together is first carried forth by the engagement ring, and is then reinforced by the wedding ring.

Engagement and wedding rings should be closely related in style. Find a jeweler that supplies a broad range of both engagement and wedding rings.

Kinds of Metals

The most common metals used to craft wedding rings are white gold, titanium, silver, and yellow gold.

The bride and groom may have different lifestyles; for this reason it is suggested that the groom's ring be made of a more durable metal. Traditionally, it is the men who cause damage to their rings due to their propensity towards labor.

Fittings

So many things clutter the mind when preparing for a wedding. It is common for a couple to complete choosing their rings, but then leave the task of getting fitted for them until the last moments. Be sure to schedule a time to get fitted for your ring, and then try them on before in case of a needed adjustment.

The Four C's

Wedding rings (especially those of the bride) are often adorned with diamonds. A jeweler associates four c's to the description of a diamond.
  • Color:
Experts gauge the worth of a diamond based on its color. The closer a diamond is to being colorless, the more it is valued.

  • Clarity:
The stone is magnified ten times when evaluated. The clarity of the diamond (or lack of imperfections) is an attribute well sought after.

  • Cut:
A diamond's cut is meant to accentuate its shine and clarity. The cut should be proportioned and faceted to bring out its allure.

  • Carat:
The term "carat" refers to the combination of a stone's color, clarity, and cut. A well cut, colorless, and clear diamond will be graded as having a higher carat. A larger carat diamond warrants a larger price.
Price

Wedding bands can be expensive. The price depends on the make of the band and any supplementary gems. Many jewelry and department stores have end of season sales. This may be a good time to shop for your wedding rings. In addition, many times a department store or jeweler offer rings online at a discounted price in comparison to rings offered at their physical stores.

Tips and Suggestions

  • Be sure to order your rings at least eight weeks prior to the wedding day. In emergency cases, most jewelers can offer "loaner rings" so you have something to exchange during the ceremony. Remember to give yourself ample time to try the ring on in the event it needs to be refitted.
  • Remember that the make of the ring will have an effect on its look and durability. Have the jeweler explain about a ring's make, finish, resistance to scratches, etc.
  • It is a romantic sentiment to buy matching rings, but it is not a necessity. Your love and commitment will not ebb because you have different tastes in jewelry. Make sure both of you select a ring that you feel comfortable wearing. This is a ring to be worn everyday for the rest of your life.
  • It is suggested to shop at a location that specializes in wedding and engagement rings. Other retail outlets may have a large selection, but most of the rings may be the same and not suitable for your special occasion.
